Thomas Van Hasebroeck is 8 years old and is convinced that he was exchanged with his neighbor Alfred the day of their birth during a fire in the hospital. As a result, he think is living Alfred's life, and vice versa. Alfred has a wealthy family. Thomas is in love with his sister Alice and dreams on becoming a secret agent to take revenge on the misfortune of his destiny. His sister Alice disappears and Thomas, now an adult, becomes a surveyor. Thomas thinks he has found Alice. But the woman called Evelyne is married to Alfred. Sixty years later, the elder Thomas wonders if there is was all wasted in his life.
