Otto and his mean kid sister Gerda eagerly await the 1942 Christmas festivities, only feeling the Nazi occupation of Norway in the effects of rationing. On Christmas Eve, their father is arrested on suspicion of harboring Jews in the rural home. They find age-peers Daniel and Sarah in the basement, and take father's hints to attempt bringing those safely to neutral Sweden. To their pleasant surprise, young neighbor Per volunteers to drive them. On the way they stop at a farm, unable to reach his resistance contact, but the crone owner who treats them to a suspiciously copious meal secretly informs the Germans, who send an armed patrol. The kids escape just in time, Pere luring them away in his truck. The four soldier on, despite Otto blaming the Jews for his father being arrested and his own endurance on this dangerous adventure. The patrol catches up, but a decent German conscript risk his own life by not reporting finding them.—KGF Vissers
