In a small town in Washington state, Emily Mariposa and her business partner Adam raise butterflies to release at events such as children's birthday parties and weddings; attending the latter, if she was being honest with herself, is still a little difficult in the pain of a serious break-up. While Emily started and continues to do the business in her love of butterflies, nature, and their role in ecology, the same cannot be said for her cutthroat competitor Mandy Fisher, who solely does it for the bottom line in knowing little about butterflies beyond how to raise them for the business, in the process she often undercutting Emily's prices. One job that Emily does manage to keep is the birthday party for adolescent Amanda. With Amanda being a budding butterfly enthusiast, her widowed father, Garrett, asks Emily for a tour of her butterfly farm for them, this beginning a friendship between Emily and Garrett/Amanda, the father who Emily, again if she was being honest, the first man she has looked at "in that way" since the breakup. But the biggest job is up for grabs when socialite Rebecca O'Keefe opens up the bidding between Emily and Mandy to supply butterflies for her upcoming wedding, the price not the issue but the number of butterflies each can supply, the increasing numbers requested by Rebecca, who the word "impossible" is not in her vocabulary, virtually impossible, at least in Emily's mind. To be able even to come close to meeting the numbers to win the contract, which would put her business in the next echelon with the public exposure of the wedding, Emily has to expand physically with Garrett and Amanda's help. In the process, Emily can admit that she is falling for Garrett. The problem is that while Garrett does have feelings for her, there is another woman, Jill, an ex-girlfriend who has recently reentered his life, and she, in addition to Garrett's father, are pressuring him to move "home" to New York for him to assume leadership of the family business, the combination which on paper is the best for Amanda in Jill having managed to get her into the finest school in the country back in New York.—Huggo |
