Snowtown, South Australia, is a desolate and dusty hamlet, little more than a battered collection of rundown buildings on the side of a highway. But the town is forever synonymous with what police discovered hidden inside an old bank vault in 1999: the dismembered remains of 6 people, stashed away in black plastic barrels. When they entered the building they thought they were walking into a hydroponic drug setup. Then came the smell. As they opened the barrels they found signs these poor souls had endured horrific torture. This bizarre and gruesome discovery led police to uncover Australia's worst ever serial killing: 12 people murdered, tortured, dismembered. John Bunting was the psychopathic ring leader behind the murders, using his charisma to manipulate those around him into joining his murderous campaign. Bunting and his acolytes would pick on their socially isolated friends and neighbours, inventing a pretext to murder and torture them, and even steal their government benefits. What makes these crimes all the more shocking is that many of these murders occurred while Bunting and his co-conspirators were under active police surveillance. |
