Textbook in PDF format This book is intended as a senior/graduate level text for students of the physical sciences and, in particular, of physics. A good knowledge of physics (as might reasonably be expected of a good third-year student) can form a basis for studying the mathematics in the book; alternatively, a good foun­dation in mathematics can form the basis for studying the physical examples of the text. The intention of the authors has been to place roughly equal emphasis on the physics and the mathematics with the goal of enabling the student to approach the theoretical aspects of the current journal literature, once versed in the subject matter of a given paper. There are many books about the mathematical techniques used in physics. They are mostly rather similar to one another and usually based on well established lecture courses. This latest addition to the list is refreshingly different. It does not seem to be based on a lecture course but rather it is conceived as a book on mathematical methods written with two main ideas in mind: one to emphasize the way in which a great deal of physics can be unified by using symmetry arguments and the other to demonstrate this specifically by the juxtaposition of examples drawn from quite diverse fields. The whole presentation is extremely interesting and stimulating.
